Life Expectancy in Japan..

Japanese average life expectancy is now the highest in the world. Both Japanese men and women hit record highs in 2007. These figures change every year, of course. The average longevity rose by 0.19 year from 2006 to 79.19 years for men and by 0.18 year to 85.99 years for women.

The World Health Organization says women in Japan have the highest life expectancy in the world with 86 years.

The reason for the increase is a combination of things. Once factor is that Japanese infant mortality rate has been sharply reduced in recent years. Now it's less than six deaths among children under age one per one thousand live births.

There has been a sharp decrease in certain adult diseases. Tuberculosis, for example, used to be one of the leading causes of death in Japan. Now it's almost nonexistent. And health care in general is much better than it used to be.
